Unfortunately the weather Gods have played us an unfair hand, and sent us some extreme weather. Landing directly on the weekend of our proposed first Nationals. The UK Committee along with Lyme Regis Sailing Club felt it was prudent to cancel the even given the extreme wind and swell that was forecast for the weekend of the 21st/22nd. The Class is looking at rearranging the event for Easter next year. Giving all those currently building some time to finish in time too!

You can't find a second hand 3.7 for love nor money in New Zealand, it would seem. Such is the popularity of the 3.7. The class in NZ is investing in new moulds to produce new boats.
Check out this great article from Yachting New Zealand which not only highlights the popularity of the class but also the wide range of ages that sail the boat competitively. 15 to 70 years old is the current spread. With a health mix of both sexes. Go here for the full article: LINK |

3.7 Radial Sail – New Development
At the recent NZ National Championships the 3.7 class trialled a smaller Radial sail for lighter weight sailors and this proved successful with positive feedback on the concept. This allows sailors in the 50+kg bracket to contemplate sailing a 3.7 whereas previously they would struggle with the full sail in a stronger breeze. The boats with this Radial sail race in the same fleet as the full sail rigs but have their own Radial division where they race against each other and are identified as such in results. The key is that it is designed to be used on the standard mast, so there is no requirement for any additional equipment other than the sail. It has a square top to help the leech open up as the sail is approximately 400mm short of the full height of the mast. The sail concept is around it being a “One Design” on dimensions, sail cloth and area with the only change allowed being to match the luff curve to the mast. The Dacron cloth is of a slightly heavier grade to make the sail last longer without compromising performance. Prospective sailors for a Radial sail include intermediate sailors, lighter weight sailors or new to the class sailors who want to start with a more manageable rig. Derek Scott the One Design Manager at North Sails Auckland NZ designed the sail and can be contacted at [email protected] for further information. Vertical Divider

Here's a link to a great report from Sail-World of the recent NZ Nationals, Charteris Bay Yacht Club on Lyttelton Harbour. It really describes well the wide age and weight ranges the 3.7 offers to the sailing public.

Farr 3.7 Breaks the Mould!
|
It’s ok, the mould is fine, we just thought it was an eye catching headline!
The Demo boat is progressing nicely. See pics. Currently weighing only 28kg. And this is with the boat built to Bruce Farr’s traditional plywood design as well as over specifying the hull skin thickness from what Bruce suggested. Imagine what a composite boat is going to weight! |
So things are progressing nicely on target for the RYA Dinghy Show 2014.
Right now we want to know what colour you think the boat should be. We just can’t decide. Cool and Classic (Antique Cream with Sapele inlays), or Crazy and Lurid. What do you think best suits this boat? Jump in on the FORUM thread LINK and have your say! |
Somethings happening in Hull...
Watch this space! Some great news is coming. |

RYA Dinghy Show 2013?
I'm sorry to say but the Farr 3.7 isn't going to be at the 2013 RYA Dinghy Show. Unfortunately due to a mix up in communications between my self and Dave Butler at Butler Boats we didn't secure a space. It's one of those, "I thought you were doing it moments?" I was under the impression that the Farr 3.7 would be on the Allen stand as thats the conversation I remembered having with Dave. And Dave didn't finalise this with Allen as he thought I had secured the same space as last year with Spinlock! |
So all in all a right old cock up. Which really is a shame as the amount of people showing interest in the class is steadily increasing. This is born out buy the amount of survey's being completed. These are really helping gauge this interested and it would have been a great show, I'm sure.
But to anyone out there who wants a test sail or is looking for a 3.7 please get in touch and we can arrange something. Dave Butler and I will be at the show at least one of the days, so come and tug either of our shirt sleeves. I'll be wearing a Farr 3.7 T shirt, and Dave is hard to miss, and most likely to be found on the Streaker Class stand |

Butler Boats produce
Farr 3.7 Mold - posted 10/05/12 Dave Butler has just sent the class some images of the 'slipper mold' that will be used to build a wooden demo boat. Which will then be measured and be used to make the final production 3.7 mold from. It's great new that things are moving forward so quickly.

Butler Boats to Build 3.7's - posted 28/03/12
Great news for all those interested in the Farr 3.7.... I have just got off the phone to Dave at Butler Boats. The results of which are that there will be an off the shelf 3.7 available from Butler Boats very soon. 'Sacre Bléu' the first 3.7 in the uk, imported by Daryl Wilkinson, will be making it's way up North for Butler Boats to refer to during their mould making process, from which a demo boat will be made. It's great news for the class that a well established and well respected boat builder has chosen to get behind the 3.7. Butler Boats contact details can be found on our 'How to get one' page. |
Big thanks to Spinlock - posted 4/03/12
Thanks to Spinlock we had a really great RYA Dinghy show. The interest was truly huge. With all the people manning the 3.7 stand starting to lose there voices from speaking to so many people. The up shot of the weekend looks like there will be at least 5 boats being built. With two under way, one starting after GCSE's and two more finalising there plans. Really interest was given by an number of boat builders and mast and fittings suppliers keen to build or supply. So once again thanks to Spinlock we are really grateful for the stand space. You made it a very successful weekend. And thanks to all the people that came to the stand with all your positive comments. See you on the water! |
