Then of course there is the self build option. This is one of the joys of Bruce Farr's design. He managed to create a boat with sparkling performance that was both lightweight and easy to build. And also provided fantastic plans to build from. These plans are currently available from the New Zealand class association but will be available from the UK Class when it is formalized in the UK. There is also available ( with the kind permission of Peter Kovesi ) a set of nested auto cad files which enable the laser cutting of all the plywood parts. Building in this way creates a mini building kit. Taking a lot of time and heart ache out of the building process. The cost of laser cutting from the provided files would be around £110. Which is well worth it. Take a look at Peter's Building Blog for a great guide to building the boat using his AUTO-CAD laser cut plywood parts. The rough cost of the wood required for the build from specialist marine timber suppliers is around the £490 mark (as of 12/02/12). Add to this mdf for the building frame, epoxy, fillers, paint and a few other consumables and the cost is around the £600 mark. The Mast, Boom and Sails if Imported from NZ would be: around £550 for Fyfes sails with the rig from C-Tech coming in at around £900. With foils from C-Tec again being around £600. Fittings and rope would most likely add another £500. So you are looking at about £3250 for a self build hull and purchased sails and rig. Not an unreasonable sum these days for a new bespoke boat. More up to date pricing information can be found on Dave Barkers Blog. He has kindly itemized all his expenditure on a spread sheet, which is freely available on his blog: GO HERE Dave Barker used ROBBINS Timber to supply ready CNC cut parts. But you can go direct to Rout4D if you have your own supply of timber. Rout4d hold the AutoCad Farr 3.7 file. You will still need to purchase a set of plans to satisfy the design rights holder and be registered and given a sail number.
New Zealand self build Kit
Andrew Howden is also offering kits for the self builder. Which maybe of interest to people who want to minimise the time spent sourcing quality ply wood and the lofting and cutting out of the frames from the plans. The prices are NZD. The figures after in brackets are the converted GBP as of (12/02/12) exchange rate. From A.Howden The prices are as follows; Frames constructed ready to stand up on the building jig with all doublers attached; $1135.67 (£595) (excluding GST which would not be applicable outside of NZ). Because of the length of the girder, and transport logistics it would be best to purchase that in cut out form and assemble it on site. that would be $320.00 (£167) (excluding GST). My suggestion would be to purchase the Gaboon ply (4 sheets of 4mm and 1 sheet 3mm for the deck) and a suitable lightweight timber for the gunwale, chines, stringers etc plus glues, and fastenings in the UK to make it cost efficient for you. Price does not include Freight to the UK as depending on the sizes and weight of the package being sent an accurate price can not be determined. |
The Import option.
Importing isn't as expensive as you think. Admittedly it does increase the cost of your purchase, but the British Pound is quite strong against the New Zealand Dollar which helps a fair bit. Not least in purchasing the boat in the first place. A rough cost for shipping is between £800 - £2000. Shipping is dependant on the volume of the space being shipped. If you ship a large Box trailer like the image below the volume is roughly twice that of the boat. So you can make significant saving by not importing the trailer, just the trolly and boat. More information on importing can be found on Daryl Wilkinson's Blog: www.ukfarr37.blogspot.com You will find plenty of pages that will help you with the import process. |
