Who sails 3.7's?
The Farr 3.7 is a single handed trapeze boat for lighter sailors. It was designed by Bruce Farr in 1971, and reputedly Bruce still thinks it's his best!
The class is a 'One Design' and is a well established class in New Zealand. With fleets developing around the world in, South Korea, Germany, France, Spain and many others... The first UK3.7 was imported by Daryl Wilkinson in 2011 and the UK class now has several home built boats, with a couple 'in build'. The first home build was by Dave Barker now finished and sailing. The class also has a committed pro boat builder - Butler Boats, who have invested in the building of two moulds for the production of foam and wood boats. Several new boats from these moulds have been built. The Farr 3.7 is a boat designed for small adults or youth sailors. With an optimum crew weight of around 65 - 80 kg, but due to it's well thought through 'one design hull' and 'box rule' rig rule set, sailors from slightly below or above (50 - 85kg) can still be competitive, as there is enough freedom to tune / develop your rig to suit your size and weight. It's a well mannered boat, that's simple, but exciting. It's a great boat to; build, own, race and sail. It's sensitive. It isn't physically demanding to sail. It's also light to move around on shore, as the hull only weighs 50kg. You also have the option to build the boat with an Asymmetric Spinnaker (although not currently class race legal with a spinnaker) this comes with no competitive weight disadvantage (see rules page) for doing so. As the spinnaker gear is counted as part of the hull's weight. So in common with Bruce Farr himself we believe the 3.7 really is - 'The Best By Farr'. |
